Bu roman Fethiye civarindaki bir köyde 1910-20 lerde geçiyor. Eskibahçe köyünde. Hiristiyan, Müslüman Osmanlilar sulh içinde kavrulup gidiyorlar, belli bir denge içinde. Çocuklar beraber oynuyorlar, birbirlerine asik oluyorlar, herkes Türkçe konusuyor köyde. Köy agasi, kalaycisi, çömlekçisi çok renkli sahislar. Köyde imam ve papazin rolleri, sürekli tavla oyniyan jandarmalarin yasamlari, pek güzel anlatilmis. Bu sirada milliyetçilik akimi basliyor ve köye Yunanca ögretmeni geliyor. Türkçe konusan hiristiyanlar Yunanca ögrenmeye pek ilgi göstermiyorlar, ana dilleri degil tabii. Birinci cihan harbi patliyor bu sirada. Köyün delikanlilari savasa gidiyorlar. Çanakkale savasinin pek iç açici olmiyan detaylari var . Ermeniler köyü terketmeye mecbur ediliyor, epey sonra da geri kalan hiristiyanlarin mübadelesi. Roman da olsa epey zor okunan detaylar da var bu olaylar hakkinda. Türklerin de zorla Rusyadan, Trakyadan çikartilip yürütüldügü çok ilginç sekilde belirtilmis romada. Istanbulun bir göçmen sehri olmasi, yasam zorluklari anlatilmis. Kitabin içinde sik sik Anadoluda olan hadiseler aktariliyor. Bu olaylar 22 adet Mustafa Kemal baslikli kisa bölümle verilmis. Bu da romana tarihi bir renk katiyor. Romanin epey bir arastirma sonunda yazildigi belli. Lisanda kullanilan Türkçe kelimeler de ayri bir renk katiyor romana. Roman 624 sayfa Alfred A. Knopf Canada baskisi. Zevkle ve ilgi ile okuyacaginizi tahmin ediyorum bu iki kitabi sicak odanizda uzun kis geceleri.
